We Traveled 600km Every 3 Months. For Medicines.
Small hospital pharmacies lose 50-60% of their prescriptions. Here is the personal story behind why they fail, and the infrastructure we built to fix them.

I called the hospital pharmacy. "Can you courier her medicines to Vizag?" The answer was no. "What about a relative's house five kilometres away?" Also no.
That same day, food was being delivered across Vizag in under ten minutes.
The Six-Year Journey for Medicine Access
My mother had surgery in Hyderabad. We live in Visakhapatnam. For six years after that surgery, someone from our family made the 600-kilometre journey every three months. We didn't go for follow-up consultations. We went solely to pick up her medicines.
The specific brands her doctor prescribed weren't available anywhere in Vizag. No retail pharmacy stocked them. No online platform carried them. The hospital back home had no pharmacy equipped to source them.
Vizag isn't a remote village. It's a major city. And still, the infrastructure simply didn't exist.
Then came the week when nobody in the family could make the trip. That's when I made those phone calls.
The absurdity hit me. You can get groceries in ten minutes. Flowers by the afternoon. But a hospital—with the prescription, the doctor, and the inventory—can't get critical medicines to a patient a few kilometres away.
This was not an exception. It was the norm.

The Problem with Independent Hospital Pharmacies
Zoom out from my family, and you hit a staggering reality. There are over 33,000 independent hospitals across India facing this exact infrastructure gap. If you want to understand hospital pharmacy problems in India, this is the root cause.
When a hospital can't fulfill its own prescriptions, patients don't stop needing medicines. They just go elsewhere. In small hospitals, 50-60% of prescriptions get filled at Apollo, MedPlus, 1mg, or the local retail shop. The doctor does the clinical work, builds the trust, and then the system pushes the patient out the door.
Meanwhile, the doctor-owner loses two to three hours scattered throughout their day firefighting pharmacy operations. Calling distributors. Handling stock discrepancies. Training their third pharmacist this year. They are constantly pulled away from patient care to manage a broken system.
"Data Highlight: Across 11 distinct categories of revenue bleed, a 20-bed hospital easily loses ₹6.4 lakhs a month without even knowing it."

What Was Actually Missing
It isn't a lack of ambition. Doctors want their pharmacies to work.
What's missing is the operating infrastructure. Organised chains spent decades building technology, processes, procurement leverage, and last-mile capability. Independent hospitals were never given access to any of it.
Hospital management systems digitize the billing, but they don't hire pharmacists. They don't negotiate with distributors. They don't show up at 6 AM to receive a delivery.
"Software alone doesn't fix this. The pharmacy problem isn't just a technology problem. It is an operations problem that technology makes solvable."

What We're Building to Fix It
This is why we built MediKloud. We are providing the tech tools, infrastructure, and operations to uplift these hospital pharmacies.
We built four core products to manage the flow of medicines from hospital pharmacies. The Virtual Pharmacy combines dark stores with hospital kiosks. The Managed Pharmacy upgrades daily operations. Our Free HMS captures data at the source. And Home Delivery retains chronic patients.
The doctor should see patients. The pharmacy should run efficiently with the right tools. We are solving the deep inefficiencies in hospital pharmacies, not just acting as another software vendor.
The Commitment
My mother still takes those medicines. The trip from Vizag to Hyderabad still exists for thousands of families who shouldn't have to make it.
We are building the infrastructure so that no hospital ever has to say "no" to a patient asking for their own prescription.
